The National Institute of Quality (INACAL), through its Directorate of Standardization, is the national standardization authority, and is responsible for representing the country internationally. The Directorate of Standardization has the main function of developing and approving the Peruvian Technical Standards for all economic sectors of the country, thereby promoting the development of the industry, consumer protection and improving competitiveness of economic actors nationally as well as internationally. At an international level, INACAL is a full member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and this Directorate participates in the CODEX Alimentarius. At the regional level, it is part of the Pan-American Committee of Technical Standards (COPANT), Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC), in the Andean Community (CAN) and within the framework of APEC, it participates in the Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC). To achieve its objectives, the Standardization Directorate creates Technical Committees with stakeholders in the field of what is to be standardized, who shall be responsible for executing the Standardization Plan, which responds to the needs of the country. The standardization work leads to the adoption of Peruvian Technical Standards, which are valuable documents that contain relevant information on quality and safety, and that, once applied, shall provide great benefits for manufacturers, consumers and the country. Also, INACAL acts as focal point for the national information service on technical standards in compliance of the TBT agreement.
